I had to do math for this :(

Week 2 of the learning project was quite honestly? not a fun time for me. This week I created the prototype for the lamp, which included a lot of math. Now I'm a math person, but like... not geometry. I did however find a lot of help from WikiHow. Here are some of the steps I had to go through to have my finished product.

  1. I started off by thinking that I'd do a simple pyramid shape, so I used this WikiHow page to point me in the right direction of shapes and measurements. However after making a small prototype of that, I realized it was not at all the vibe I was going for, which brings us to

  2. Scratch everything, I want to do hexagonal pyramid instead, which is surprisingly hard to find directions for? So I found this WikiHow page on how to draw a perfect hexagon and used the square pyramid instructions to draw out what I thought was a good start.

3. THEN I needed to find how to actually make the pyramid, because so far all I had was random shapes. So I found this amazing teaching resource that has all the diy paper shapes anyone could ever ask for, and I used that as a pattern to trace my triangle and created something that looked like this!

4. Now this thing, although she is beautiful, is also very small. So now I needed to scale her up to actual human lamp size, which meant about a 2:1 scale. To refresh my memory on exactly how to do that, I went back to good ol' WikiHow to a page about scaling drawings, did

some simple math and voila! I had this huge triangle, also known as 1 of 6 lamp shade panels.

Now I just had to cut out 5 more of those big triangles, and I would have the paper pattern for my lamp! I also have to cut about an inch off the top so light can come through, but that's for when I actually tape them all together. Join me next week for the fun part, actually drawing what the glass pieces will look like! In the meantime, please enjoy some bloopers from the process.

Here, I needed 2 1/2 inches space, as you can see I did not have that and I had to restart.

And here, my compass broke :( I had to tape a pencil to it for the rest of the process.

Its crazy to hear the struggles you had to go through in order to make your outlines! Did the taped pencil work well or did it just cause more hassle than it was worth?
